IBS can cause many problems for people, usually people have tried everything they can think of that is conventional (main stream) to get help with the problem then and only then will they look for more unconventional approaches like hypnotherapy for IBS. Below, I will explain what are different IBS problems the symptoms and how you develop IBS problems and the relevant statistics. Then I will go over the different treatments available and finally how hypnotherapy for IBS can help eliminate your IBS problems.

What Is IBS?

IBS is also known as spastic colon, irritable colon, mucous colitis, and spastic colitis. It is a separate condition from inflammatory bowel disease. IBS is a group of intestinal symptoms that usually occur together. These symptoms will vary in severity and duration from person to person. They will last at least three months for at least three days per month. IBS can cause intestinal damage in some rare cases, but this is not common. IBS doesn’t increase your risk of gastrointestinal cancers, but it still will have a significant effect on your life.

What Are the Different IBS Problems?

Constipation

Experience alternate constipation with normal stools. Symptoms of abdominal cramping or aching are commonly triggered by eating.

Diarrhoea

Experience diarrhoea first thing in the morning or after eating. The need to go to the toilet is typically urgent and cannot be delayed. Incontinence may be a problem.

Alternating constipation and diarrhoea.

What Are the Symptoms of IBS Problems?

You may experience a range of symptoms and they will vary from one person to another. Below is a range of symptoms that you may experience.

Emotional Symptoms That Can Contribute to IBS Problems

  • Angry
  • Sad
  • Anxious
  • Guilt
  • Resentment
  • Resentment
  • Shame
  • Useless
  • Not good enough
  • Worthless
  • Unlovable
  • Lost
  • Helpless
  • Trapped
  • Confused
  • Lonely
  • Isolated
  • Failure
  • Exhausted
  • Hopeless
  • Numb
  • Empty

You will find that if you experience more stress at some point, this will cause the symptoms of IBS to be triggered and exacerbated.

Other Symptoms of IBS Problems May Include

Abdominal Pain

Most people with IBS experience abdominal pain, and usually, this is felt in the lower abdomen. The pain can be cramp or sharp, stabbing or dull and can last minutes or hours. Often, abdominal pain will be made better or worse by defection (doing a poo).

Bowel Changes

This can be constipation, diarrhoea or alternating between constipation and diarrhoea, meaning erratic and unpredictable bowel habits.

Constipation

This is a common problem believed to affect about half the people with IBS. People who suffer constipation often experience.

  • Difficulty passing a bowel motion (straining)
  • A feeling that the bowel is not properly emptied after a bowel motion
  • Hard or lumpy stools
  • Infrequent bowel motions
  • Sensation of blockage in the anus and/or rectum
  • Use of the fingers to remove stool
  • When constipation is present, this can make other IBS symptoms worse, such as abdominal pain, excessive gas, bloating and distension.

Diarrhoea

Loose or watery bowel motions are common in IBS. This can cause more frequent, urgent bowel movements. In severe cases, diarrhoea can cause incontinence.

Bloating & Distension

Bloating and distension are common, bothersome symptoms in IBS. Bloating refers to a sensation of abdominal swelling. Will describe this feeling as an inflated balloon in the belly. By contrast, abdominal distention refers to an actual increase in abdominal circumference (sometimes called abdominal girth). Because abdominal bloating and distension are different symptoms, they can occur together or separately.

People who suffer bloating and distension often report that these symptoms will get worse over the day, get worse with meals, and improve overnight.

Flatulence

Excessive flatulence where the passage of flatus/gas/wind is greater than usual.

Fatigue

Fatigue may also occur because of abdominal symptoms.

Women

symptoms are more common in women and may be worse around menstruation or at times of stress

Will I Have IBS Forever?

IBS is considered a chronic condition, which means it is present over the long term. IBS symptoms change, come and go over time. Symptoms may improve or disappear for a time, and then return, or new symptoms may develop. Symptoms may also change from being quite mild to sometimes being quite severe.

Current Statistics

IBS develops in as many as 1 in 5 Australians at some point in their lifetime and is twice as common in women as it is in men.

It often develops in the late teens or early 20s. Having a close relative with IBS may slightly increase your chance of having it.

Anxiety & Anger Problem

Hi

I came and saw Rodney inns in about 2010 for my anxiety and anger and it worked amazingly well...Now I'm desperate to quit smoking and want to make an appointment to see Rodney   Thanks so much   Nicola

Asked if I could use the email as a Testimonial and the Response...

Of course! Go for your life. You worked magic on me. I was taking 4-6mg of xanax a day (for 2-3 years) and had so much anger towards certain things in my life.

I left the session feeling calmer (no withdrawals at all) than ever, and when i thought about those things that made me angry, i literally laughed at them.

You really did help me more so than any shrink/medication has throughout my life.

Thanks Rodney

No More Sugar Addiction

I had an extreme addiction to sugar for more than 40 years. I would regularly substitute meals for sugar laden cakes, pastries, biscuits and chocolate and had no control over my behaviour.

I would go to the supermarket and buy sweets and eat them before I got home so no-one would know.

I am free! I have control over my life now rather than my addiction controlling me. I can easily say no to sweets put in front of me and then don't give it another thought.

I no longer obsess over what sugary foods I'll eat next and how quickly can I get to it. It's one of the best things I've ever done for myself - my mind and my health.

Thank you Rodney.

Depression, Low Self-Esteem

Hi Rodney,

Hoping you are well. I wanted to send through a review.

I had been struggling with over thinking myself into tight mental corners, low self esteem, frustration and guilt from the conscious age of 17.

The therapy offered by Rodney at Synergy Hypnotherapy has given me a healthy perspective of and freedom from these thoughts and bad habits.

I have a much brighter and positive view of the future!

Thank you very much for your help, Rodney.

How Do You Develop IBS Problems?

The underlying cause of irritable bowel syndrome is still unknown, but certain factors have been found to trigger attacks in susceptible individuals.

Infection

An episode of gastroenteritis will often result in persistent bowel symptoms, long after the offending bacteria or virus has been eliminated. The cause of this is unknown, but may involve changes to nerve function in the bowel or changes in the normal bacterial population of the bowel. Up to 25 percent of IBS may be because of this problem.

Food Intolerance

Impaired absorption of the sugar lactose (found in dairy and many processed foods) is the most common dietary trigger for IBS. Other sugars believed to trigger IBS are fructose (present in many syrups) and sorbitol.

General Diet

Low-fibre diets can exacerbate the constipation of constipation IBS. Some people find that spicy or sugary foods cause problems. However, many experts are sceptical about the role of a general diet, once specific food intolerances have been eliminated.

Emotional Stress

Strong emotions, such as anxiety or stress, can affect the nerves of the bowel in susceptible people, making the symptoms worse.

Medication

Certain types (such as antibiotics, antacids and painkillers) can lead to constipation or diarrhoea.

Gut Sensitivity

People with IBS may have a more sensitive gut, this is sometimes called visceral sensitivity they have a highly sensitive gut wall. This means they are more sensitive to normal movements of the gut, such as stretching or distension. These normal events are uncomfortable or quite painful in people with IBS. Around 60% of people with IBS have a highly sensitive gut wall.

Altered Gut Motility

The contents of the gut may move unusually quickly or slowly, this is sometimes called altered gut motility. This means that contents move through the gut unusually quickly or unusually slowly. Around 1 in 3 people with IBS have this problem. If movement through the gut is unusually fast, this may result in diarrhoea. If movement through the gut is unusually slow, this may result in constipation.

Bacterial

People with IBS may have an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in their gut, this is called dysbiosis. The gut microbiota refers to the complex community of microorganisms that live within the humans gut. Although we still do not know whether our gut bacteria cause IBS, some research has shown differences between the microbiota of people with and without IBS.

Leaky Gut

People with IBS may have a slightly inflamed or leaky gut that is not readily detected on usual testing. Other causes of IBS include inflammation in the intestine or, a more permeable or leaky gut wall.

As a Hypnotherapist I Have a Different Take on Gut Directed Hypnotherapy

All the above can contribute to IBS and the symptoms of this problem and as a hypnotherapist I cannot use gut directed hypnotherapy treat most of the things listed above so I take this from a slightly different angle. I look at the physical symptoms and the emotions people have associated with their IBS. Because the symptoms and emotions I can work with as a hypnotherapist to alleviate or eliminate the IBS. As is stated above no one really knows why people have IBS or how to fix it but as a hypnotherapist I have helped many people eliminate their IBS or at least eliminate over 80% of the symptoms associated with it.

So lets explore how this works in more detail first I will cover the basics then I will go into more detail around how this works with the IBS.

So all the symptoms mentioned above can trigger you into having an IBS attack and you can experience anxiety because of this; However, it’s not that simple. We store our emotions in our bodies and they are anchored to our memories. So over time as you have more and more memories or experiences of being anxious, you store these emotions in your body anchored to your memories and you accumulate them. You can also store these emotions in different parts of the body like your stomach or colon, etc.

So imagine emotions are not on or off they are on a scale of say 1–10 so when you’re young your anxiety level is low say a 1 and as you get older and accumulate more memories of anxiety that level goes up to say 3, 6, 7 etc till it reaches a point where you really feel anxious. The level at which this happens differs from person to person.

So all the symptoms mentioned above have the potential to create a feeling of anxiety also normal life events will contribute to this as well and all this gets stored in the body anchored to your memories and if you have enough of these events, you will get really anxious. Sometimes it may only take one event, but normally it’s usually and accumulation of events that will trigger off anxiety and hence IBS attack. Now this applies to all emotions that you experience not just anxiety.

Anchoring Physical Symptoms

So if you take what I have said above and think of it this way we anchor the emotions to thoughts, beliefs and behaviours. So lets say you think about and focus on the symptoms of the IBS as you do this you are actually anchoring whatever emotions your experiencing at that moment to that part of the body but also those physical symptoms. Now over time you will anchor more and more emotions to this part of the body and the symptoms in effect you will also make this symptoms worse and we can also develop new symptoms to add to the old.

Autopilot and Being a Robot

Another factor which is huge to take into consideration is 99% of what we do is automatic and subconscious we learn how to do something we practice doing it then we automate it once we automate it, it is no longer under our conscious control so we are essentially a robot; We are half asleep. So every body is half asleep and sleepwalking, and they are just a robot.

So this will be a problem because at a subconscious level you have automated focusing on the IBS at certain times of the day or even different times of the week or month etc which can then trigger it off. There will be many other anchors that will also trigger it off as well and you will probably not even be aware of them. It could be a smell, a taste, a colour the types of anchors are numerous. Your emotional state can even be an anchor so if you stress about work or relationships or something else that is normal that can also trigger off the IBS. So at a subconscious level your learning how to automate focusing on the IBS and trigger it off.

Diagnosis of IBS

If you suspect you have irritable bowel syndrome, it is important to seek medical advice to make sure your symptoms aren’t caused by any other illness. Such as diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease or polyps. Coeliac disease (an immune intolerance to gluten) can produce many of the same symptoms as IBS. Lactose intolerance can produce bloating, cramps and diarrhoea.

Diagnosis methods include

  • Full medical check-up
  • Blood tests, including blood tests for coeliac disease
  • Stool tests
  • Investigation of the bowel lining by inserting a small tube (sigmoidoscopy)
  • Investigation of the bowel under sedation (colonoscopy) or barium enema, if necessary.

Unreliable tests for IBS

  • Breath tests
  • IgG food intolerance tests
  • Faecal microbiota testing

Treatments for IBS Problems Excluding Gut Hypnotherapy

IBS cannot be cured with medication or special diets. The primary preventative measure is to identify and avoid triggers.

  • A modest increase in dietary fibre, together with plenty of clear fluids
  • Reducing or eliminating common gas-producing foods, such as beans and cabbage
  • Reducing or eliminating dairy foods, if lactose intolerance is a trigger
  • Treatments to treat constipation
  • Stress management, if stress seems to be triggering the attacks
  • Establishing eating routines and avoiding sudden changes of routine.
  • Changing your lifestyle and diet
  • Participating in regular physical exercise
  • Cutting back on caffeinated beverages that stimulate the intestines
  • Eating smaller meals
  • Taking probiotics (good bacteria normally found in the intestines)
  • Avoiding deep-fried foods
  • Low FODMAP diet
  • Gluten-free diet
  • Fat-restricted diet
  • Coffee and caffeine restriction
  • Alcohol restriction
  • Restriction of spicy foods
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Multi-component psychological therapy
  • Dynamic psychotherapy

Some people choose to take medicines to treat their symptoms when they flare up.

  • Anti-diarrhoeal medicines
  • Painkillers
  • Constipation treatments
  • Antispasmodics (to ease cramping)
  • Antidepressants (which are used to treat pain and depression)

How Can IBS Hypnosis Eliminate Your IBS Problem Using Hypnotherapy for IBS?

Well, the only way I know that we can achieve this is through using NLP and hypnotherapy for IBS, by removing all the emotions associated with the IBS but be careful not all hypnotherapists practising hypnosis for IBS know how to work with emotions and remove them.

Different Types of Gut Directed Hypnotherapy

However, most gut directed hypnotherapy approaches don’t work to eliminate addiction in this way most hypnotherapists work by introducing suggestions into your subconscious mind to change your thoughts and hence your behaviours, so it can work great with behaviour problems but not emotions. Unfortunately, most hypnotherapists are taught this behavioural suggestion type of gut directed hypnotherapy.

Fortunately, I am trained in how to work with emotions and physical symptoms, more importantly how to remove them, and this is the key to eliminating IBS problems.

I have been working with clients for years helping them eliminate their IBS problems by using gut directed hypnotherapy and other neuro-hypnotic re-patterning techniques.

This is achieved by removing or disconnecting the emotions and physical symptoms from your memories; Remember, you store your emotions and physical symptoms in your body anchored to your memories. So using these techniques, we can make your memories emotionless and symptomless.

So we will remove all emotions and physical symptoms that trigger your IBS problems like anxiety, anger, sad, worthless, pain, bloating, burning, etc.

Test at the End of My Gut Hypnotherapy Session

At the end of my gut hypnotherapy sessions as a test I get the client to go back to all their bad memories and try to get any old emotions associated with them back, but hey cannot get any emotion or physical symptoms associated with these memories, they just feel blank or neutral. I also will get them to test a variety of contexts in their life such as work, self, relationships, future, etc. But all of these different contexts and memories are the same they just feel blank or neutral.

Finally, I will get them to go back to all the times they can remember having the IBS problems and they won’t be able to get any of the old emotions, physical sensations from those memories. This means they will not automatically go into their old automatic emotions and physical symptoms from the past because we have broken the old patterns.

So at the end of the IBS hypnotherapy session these clients will no longer have the IBS
