What Is Anger?

Anger is one of the basic human emotions. Anger is tied to basic survival and were honed over the long course of human history. Anger is related to the fight, flight, or freeze response of the sympathetic nervous system; It prepares humans to fight.

But fighting doesn't necessarily mean throwing punches; It might motivate communities to combat injustice by changing laws. Anger too easily or frequently mobilized can undermine relationships, and it is harmful to our health in the long term. Prolonged release of the stress hormones that accompany anger can destroy neurons in areas of the brain associated with judgment and short-term memory, and it can weaken the immune system.

While anger is a part of our range of emotions, it is how we respond to and express anger that can cause problems. Anger may arise when things don’t happen the way we want or people don’t act the way we would like. It’s usually a reaction to a trigger event or emotion, which can include feeling embarrassed, guilt or shame, jealousy, stress and a host of other reasons.

When we are angry, there is nearly always an underlying need that has not been met. Sometimes this is something material (such as money) or it can be a desired emotion such as wanting to be respected or loved. Understanding our anger can be difficult, as it is often not immediately clear where it is coming from.

Physical Effects of Anger

Anger triggers the body’s fight-or-flight response. Other emotions that trigger this response include fear and anxiety. The adrenal glands flood the body with stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. The brain shunts blood away from the gut and towards the muscles, to prepare for physical exertion. Heart rate, blood pressure and respiration increase, the body temperature rises and the skin perspires, muscles tighten. The mind is sharpened and focused.

When you’re constantly in a state of anger or spend a lot of your time in this state, it can be very harmful to your health. Your body was not designed to be in this state, except for short periods of time when your safety is in jeopardy. Angry people also drink, smoke, and eat more than other people. Below is a list of health problems that are associated with being in this state.

Health Problems from Anger

The constant flood of stress chemicals and associated metabolic changes that go with ongoing unmanaged anger can eventually cause harm to many systems of the body. Some short- and long-term health problems that have been linked to anger include.

  • Headache
  • Digestion problems, such as abdominal pain
  • Insomnia
  • Increased anxiety
  • Depression
  • High blood pressure
  • Skin problems, such as eczema
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke

  • Feeling argumentative
  • Becoming sarcastic
  • Losing a sense of humour
  • Shouting, yelling, screaming, or crying
  • Acting in an abusive manner
  • Craving substances such as alcohol or tobacco

Negative Thinking

Negative thinking is very common when you’re angry, but it will make your anger worse. For example, you might have had a hard day at work and feel stressed. When you pick your children up from school, they argue in the back seat, which makes you feel frustrated and stressed. Once you get home, they refuse to take out their lunch boxes and put their bags away so you feel angry.

Here are some negative thoughts that you might have in this situation:

  • No-one ever helps me, I have to do everything myself all the time
  • They never listen to me and always do what I don’t want
  • Damn children are a pain in the ass
  • Why don’t they behave, they make me feel so angry I just want to kill them
  • Why do they always do this to me? They never do what I want no matter how many times I tell them
  • I can’t believe that did that I just told them not to

If you notice thoughts like these, then you also notice that you tend to just go around in circles repeating the same thing over and over and this will make you even more and more angry as you keep focusing on the problem, sometimes this can go on for days as you stew on it and you’re also anchoring more anger to the memory and thoughts.

Impact of Anger on Family Social Life and Work

Angry people are less likely to have healthy supportive relationships. Because they are constantly angry, angry people have fewer friends. Angry people are also more likely to be depressed, and they are more likely to become verbally and or physically abusive towards others. Chronic anger reduces intimacy within personal relationships; partners and other family members are more guarded and less able to relax in their interactions with angry family members.

Angry people frequently have pessimistic and negative attitudes toward others and cannot recognize or use support when it is available. Because angry people don’t realize the impact their behavior has on others, they don’t realize that they are pushing people away.

Affects of Anger on Children

  • Children of angry parents are more aggressive and noncompliant
  • Children of angry parents are less empathetic
  • Children of angry parents have poor overall adjustment
  • There is a strong relationship between parental anger and delinquency
  • The effects of parental anger can continue to impact the adult child, including increasing degrees of depression, social alienation, spouse abuse, and career and economic achievement

Current Statistics

  • 65% of office workers have experienced office rage
  • 45% of staff regularly lose their temper at work
  • 53% of people have been victims of bullying at work
  • 65% of people express anger over the phone, 26% in writing and 9% face to face
  • 80.4% of drivers claim to have involved in road rage incidents
  • Over 50% of shoppers have stormed out of a shop because of bad service and frustration

Reviews for Anger Management Hypnosis

Anxiety & Anger Problem

Hi

I came and saw Rodney inns in about 2010 for my anxiety and anger and it worked amazingly well...Now I'm desperate to quit smoking and want to make an appointment to see Rodney   Thanks so much   Nicola

Asked if I could use the email as a Testimonial and the Response...

Of course! Go for your life. You worked magic on me. I was taking 4-6mg of xanax a day (for 2-3 years) and had so much anger towards certain things in my life.

I left the session feeling calmer (no withdrawals at all) than ever, and when i thought about those things that made me angry, i literally laughed at them.

You really did help me more so than any shrink/medication has throughout my life.

Thanks Rodney

Nicola

Amazing! Best in Melbourne!

Anxiety, Anger, Depression, Motivation, Losing Weight, Cleaning and Abandonment After 15 years of trying various things and spending thousands of dollars, I attended only 3 sessions with Rodney I no longer have anger issues or outbursts. My relationships with family members and friends have improved.

My house is cleaner. I go to the gym and are mindful of what I eat and my fear of abandonment has disappeared. I am now a calm, confident individual who no longer has anger outbursts, anxiety attacks, snack at night, I no longer get migraines before cleaning the house and I have no fear that my partner will abandon me. Life is so much better for me.

Thank you Rodney

Why Do I Get Angry?

Anger can be our way of expressing or responding to a range of other feelings that are triggered by different situations or things that others may do that cause you to feel the following which then causes you to get angry, the list is way too big to put here and what will anger one person will not raise an eyebrow from another so these triggers are different for different people.

  • Frustration
  • Embarrassment or humiliation
  • Guilt or shame
  • Jealousy
  • Hurt or sadness
  • Feeling unable to control a situation
  • Feeling threatened or frightened
  • Feeling unfairly treated
  • Feeling misunderstood or not listened to
  • Feeling a loss of connection to family, community or country
  • Deceived
  • Powerless
  • Invalidated or unfairly treated
  • Disrespected
  • Racism

As a Hypnotherapist I Have a Different Take on Anger

In my experience hypnotherapist in helping people through hypnotherapy with their anger problems over the years I have discovered most of the underlying reasons for these problems are emotions; fear, feeling like you’re disrespected, small, useless, not good enough… I could go on for ages these drive all people's problems with anger.

So lets explore how this works in more detail first I will cover the basics then I will go into more detail. So all the things mentioned above can trigger you into being angry; However, it’s not that simple. We store our emotions in our bodies and they are anchored to our memories. So over time as you have more and more memories or experiences of being angry, you store these emotions in your body anchored to your memories and you accumulate them.

So imagine emotions are not on or off they are on a scale of say 1–10 so when you’re young your anger level is low say a 1 and as you get older and accumulate more memories of anger that level goes up to say 3, 6, 7 etc till it reaches a point where you really feel angry. The level at which this happens differs from person to person. Now this level is not on or off as I have said you could be at an anger level of 5 and you’re at this level 24 hours a day 7 days a week it may fluctuate around this level a bit but you’re at this level all the time even when sleeping.

So all the things mentioned above have the potential to create a feeling of anger that gets stored in the body anchored to your memories and if you have enough of these memories, you will get really angry. Sometimes it may only take one event, but normally it’s usually and accumulation of events that will trigger off anger. Now this applies to all emotions you experience not just anger.

Anchoring Thoughts and Behaviours

Think of it this way we anchor the emotions to thoughts, beliefs and behaviours. So the more emotions you anchor to a thought and behaviour, the more likely you automate that thought and behaviour. Think of emotions as glue they anchor the thoughts and behaviours in place the more emotions you have attached to something the more you either do that behaviour or try to avoid it. Also, communication is a behaviour. So when certain things happen, you already have anger anchored to it and a behavioural response that just goes off automatically like a robot. We also anchor the anger to all the things that make us angry our triggers it could be a person, word, tone of voice, a location the list of things that anger could be anchored to is limitless.

Angry People Have Rules

Angry people have lots of rules and when your rules get broken you get angry and your rules are thoughts like you must, you got to; you have to, you should, you shouldn’t, if you loved me, if you cared about me, if you respected me, if you had half a brain. If you hear any of these thoughts in your head well, there is a rule there somewhere and when it gets broken you get angry. What would happen if you didn’t have all these rules would you be able to get angry? Well, no of course not, anger requires a rule to activate without one you can’t get angry.

Autopilot and Being a Robot

Another factor which is huge to take into consideration is 99% of what we do is automatic and subconscious we learn how to do something we practice doing it then we automate it once we automate it, it is no longer under our conscious control so we are essentially a robot; We are half asleep. So every body is half asleep and sleepwalking, and they are just a robot. And when it comes to our emotions, we learn them subconsciously on autopilot and many of our behaviours as well.

This impacts us in our behaviour and the way we interact and communicate in our day-to-day life we have learned how to behave and communicate in the past, so we just do exactly the same as we have done in the past because we are robots and we are on autopilot.

I am sure you have told your partner not to say or do something in the past but they just continue to do it no matter how much you complain, or maybe they stop but it only lasts for a while then they start doing it again. The reason is they are on auto pilot they are a robot they are just doing what they have been programmed to do in the past. So they are not actually doing it on purpose and they are not doing it to you! They are just doing what they have been programmed to do, remember they are a robot.

Someone Is Hurting You

Lets say someone is intentionally trying to hurt you! What emotional state would they have to be in? Well, they would have to be angry, anxious, low self esteem etc and they are chucking a fit like a 2 your old child so even when they are intentionally trying to hurt you it is not about you it is about them and their negative emotional state, you’re just handy and if they don’t do it to you, they will do it to the next person, and the next person and the next person it is never about you it is always about them and their negative state. Does that make sense?

But We Take Everything Personally

Literally as a human we take everything that happens personally it is always about me even when it is not about you but you make it about you, anyway. I am sure you have been at a party and someone looks at you and you think “why are they looking at me like that?”, “they don’t like me”, “they are putting me down” blah, blah, Blah. Guess what they are probably thinking? That’s right exactly the same thing that you’re thinking.

You take it personally and you make up this whole fantasy reason for them looking at you when you didn’t even talk to them. We do this all the time a group of people laugh out loud and you assume they are laughing at your expense even though they are not you still take it personally Im sure you have done this before as well only to find out later they were laughing at something else.

So we tend to automatically look for people trying to hurt us we filter for it subconsciously on autopilot and we will distort what people say and to to fit this filter so we interpret things as people attacking us when they are not because we take it personally.

What Does Anger Want to Do Its Purpose?

So what is angers purpose what does it want to do? It wants to come out and play and have some fun by arguing and fighting that is all anger is for it has no other purpose other than arguing and fighting. So how does it do this? Remember what I said you emotions are on a scale of 1-10 so you could be at an anger level 6 and you’re at this level 24 hours a day 7 days a week. So the anger influences our behaviour and thoughts because we are in that state so it will influence what you say how you say it, for instance, angry people will use certain words and tones of voice to insult people make them angry so it can start a fight. But remember, we are robots we are on autopilot we are half asleep so they are not doing this on purpose and anyway you don’t choose your words or tone of voice at a conscious level it happens on a subconscious level. You may even just disagree with people that is the quickest way to start a fight. And these people have no idea they are doing it. I have had many clients who get into arguments all the time but don’t know how because they are not doing it on purpose it just seems to happen in fact they hate it but can’t stop it.

When Does Anger Become a Problem?

Anger becomes a problem when it begins to affect a person’s daily life and causes them to react in ways that might hurt themselves and others around them. Signs that anger might be a problem include.

  • Feeling angry often at an overwhelming level
  • Having trouble controlling anger
  • Feeling sad and distressed because of getting angry
  • Using alcohol and other drugs to manage anger
  • Feeling the need to use anger to get people to do something
  • Withdrawing from people or situations
  • Bottling things up rather than coping with them
  • Regretting the things you did or said when you were angry
  • Being aggressive or violent (e.g., shouting, swearing, throwing or hitting things).

Anger Management Techniques

Anger management techniques focus on recognising the warning signs that you’re getting angry and implementing techniques that can help diffuse the anger before it escalates. Recognising the signals of anger and realizing how your anger works is the first step to change.

Anger has signals in our bodies, our emotions, physical reactions, our thoughts and our actions. The goal of anger management strategies is to reduce the intensity associated with your emotional feelings by offering alternatives that can help you manage them better. You can’t get rid of, or avoid, the things or the people that may anger you, but you can learn to recognise anger warning signs and control your reactions.

  • There are many strategies that can help you manage your anger before it gets out of hand.
  • Time out, take a break for a bit
  • Controlled breathing
  • Use calming self-statements such as “Cool it. You can handle this.”
  • Relaxation skills
  • Changing beliefs that contribute to anger
  • Physical activity
  • Problem-solving strategies
  • Write things down or compose an unsent letter
  • Learn assertiveness skills
  • Better Communication
  • Work on responses that help with your anger, develop a list of things to say to yourself before, during and after situations in which you may get angry.
  • If you feel out of control, walk away from the situation temporarily until you cool down.
  • Recognise and accept the emotion as normal and part of life.
  • Try to pinpoint the exact reasons why you feel angry.
  • Once you have identified the problem, consider coming up with different strategies for how to remedy the situation.
  • Talk to someone you trust about how you’re feeling.

Benefits of Regular Exercise in Mood Management

People who are stressed are more likely to experience anger. Regular exercise can improve mood and reduce stress levels. This may be because physical exertion burns up stress chemicals, and it also boosts production of mood-regulating neurotransmitters in the brain, including endorphins and catecholamines.

Treatments for Anger Excluding Hypnosis for Anger

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Problem-solving
  • Relaxation skills training

How Can Anger Hypnosis Eliminate Your Anger Using Anger Management Hypnosis?

Well, the only way I know that we can achieve this is through using NLP and anger management hypnosis, by removing all the emotions associated with the anger but be careful not all hypnotherapists practising anger management hypnosis know how to work with emotions and remove them.

Different Types of Hypnotherapy for Anger Management

However, most hypnotherapy for anger management approaches don’t work to eliminate Anger problems in this way most hypnotherapists work by introducing suggestions into your subconscious mind to change your thoughts and hence your behaviours, so it can work great with behaviour problems but not emotions. Unfortunately, most hypnotherapists are taught this behavioural suggestion type of hypnotherapy for anger management.

Fortunately, I am trained in how to work with emotions, more importantly how to remove them, and this is the key to eliminating anger problems.

I have been working with clients for years helping them eliminate their anger problems by using hypnotherapy for anger management and other neuro-hypnotic re-patterning techniques.

This is achieved by removing or disconnecting the emotions from your memories; Remember, you store your emotions in your body anchored to your memories. So using these techniques, we can make your memories emotionless.

So we will remove all emotions that trigger your anger problems like anxiety, anger, sad, worthless, etc.

Test at the End of My Hypnosis for Anger Session

At the end of my hypnosis for anger sessions as a test I get the client to go back to all their bad memories and try to get any old emotions associated with them back, but hey cannot get any emotion associated with these memories, they just feel blank or neutral. I also will get them to test a variety of contexts in their life such as work, self, relationships, future, etc. But these different contexts and memories are the same they just feel blank or neutral.

Finally, I will get them to go back to all the times they can remember having the anger problems and they won’t be able to get any of the old emotions, physical sensations from those memories. This means they will not automatically go into their old automatic emotions and behaviours from the past because we have broken the old patterns.

So when they go into all the situations in the past that would have made them angry they just won’t be able to do it anymore we have broken those anchors and also we have lowered the general anger level all the way down from the high it used to be at.

So at the end of the hypnosis for anger session, these clients will no longer have the anger problem.
